I myself would not rely on the xp built in firewall, but just how good is it.I use Zonealarm but my other half uses the xp built in firewall.I need some opinions in print to show her that xp firewall alone is not the best way to stay secure on the net.We both use updated anti virus and anti spy programs,so please guys give me some feedback to show her how at risk she could be.All opinions on xp firewall are welcome cheers.

Windows' Firewall in general isn't that bad to be honest. I have never used a seperate firewall apart from to test Zonealarm and in my opinion it doesn't do much apart from slow down your system

XP/vista F/W minimal unauthorized outgoing traffic blocking

3rd party F/W full unauthorized outgoing traffic blocking

so only a problem if you get infected with spyware or trojan

Also 3rd party firewalls can block incoming traffic as well as outgoing. They can be useful, because when your computer receives a packet on an unauthorized port, the firewall prevents the computer from replying, effectively making your computer invisible to the internet from those ports. Yes, it is bad if a hacker knows whether your computer is there or not, because even if you don't have spyware or trojan infections, depending on what programs you are running a hacker may exploit security weaknesses they provide.

xp firewall is actually very good, but you cant beat the added protection of a commercial firewall.

personally, i dont like to rely only on the xp firewall, but if you do its not the end of your virtual world

It is absolutely useless, 99% of the time when it asks me if I want to let a program access the internet, it already has internet access, and when I click Deny, it still has access
