Look -- sounds that start occuring that were not there before are seldom if ever a good sign.

Your system is relatively old -- I would start gathering together everything you need to replace that
Hard Drive -- I would contact Dell to see if they can provide any help.

Because of how compact everything is in a laptop -- I would spend a little extra time trying to find
exactly where that ticking sound is coming from!!!

if it is coming from the hdd it maybe just vibrating against something... but if its secure and still making noise it maybe about to die. My old hdd made noises and i took no notice of it until one day it booted with blue screen of death... put hdd in another computer and it was completely currupted and dead and just stop working after a week. So have a look and maybe back some stuff up aswell incase thats what it is.

Yep I have a Dell Inspiron too and the drive started to make a very faint regular clicking sound.. it then got louder over time, till i started getting blue screen disk error messages, them cregular crashes and finally complete failure.

Same notebook here! Mine does some tickling noise every now and then.
Seems like the HDD is not in very good shape.
I had the same problem on my PC before, and I lost almost all the data!!!

ok thanks for the help so far. still welcoming more suggestions.
It is an IBM hard drive, but the driver i got from Dell's website is not helping, it (laptop) says that the hard drive cannot use that tool.
