your hardware is fine for encoding video files but making standard movie video to a vob takes a bit of a wait. It has to edit and recode alot of frames and sync the audio with it too. Might be some faster software out there, or if your encoder has the option you should set it to the highest priorty =)

ok you could try convertxtodvd, its the fastest (with best results) i've found, It takes me on average 1 hour to encode a avi to a full 4.7gb (4.35gb to be exact) My computer is a AMD 64X2 Dual Core 4200+ with 1gb of ram. I also use Canopus Procoder2 but this take anything between 90 mins to 2 and a half hours. On my last computer it took me anywhere from 4 to 8 hours, so basically its down to the power of your computer, coupled with convertxtodvd which does a great job faster than most.

ConvertX is fairly quick but I would not say it's twice as fast as anything else.
If your avi is < 850mb, you'd expect around 70 minutes. Much bigger than that and encoding speed gets compomised by compression issues.
If its encoding speed you want then MainConcept h264 is the one - output quality is at least equal to anything else. The result is a dvd compliant mpg which you can burn quickly with adobe encore. Best if you make or aquire a number of different encore templates.
Once you get used to it, that is the quickest method but you'd still need to allocate 45-60 minutes, even with the right sized avi as your source. Oh and its all too easy to lose the time saving on playing with different menu effects.
ConvertX is excellent - foolproof, decent output, reliable and predictable, for taking a d/loaded Avi and spending a maximum 2 minutes of my input to produce a playable DVD in around 1.25 hours it wins hands down - ONLY criticism is limited menu options.
