How To Convert Divx/Avi into smaller file size mkv
Ive seen some mkv files that were much smaller than their xvid/divx/avi counterparts with at minimum the same quality...so..

Im looking into converting a bunch of divx/avi videos I have into smaller mkv files to save some hard drive space...

im looking to be pointed in the right direction as far as programs, tutorials, web sites etc... and tips...that will get me started on this process...

First of all Converting xvid > H.264 wont magically half the file size . Youll be lucky to shave 15MB off the file with the same bitrate (even less so with fast profiles) in h.264.

I say h.264 because MKV adds precisely ~censored~ to this process except unnecessary incompatibility and rubbish tools. With that said you have two choices .

Either decide that 15MB isnt worth the CPU time (Which is the case for storage not for uploading) or use Sorenson Squeeze to create the 15MB smaller files at the same bitrate .

If you want to upload the files in the MKV container (so the morons think your cool and blow you) then you can remux > MKV and upload the incompatible files .

my main concern is reducing file size and trying to keep generally the same quality if that is possible for the cpu time... 15mb isnt worth the cpu time to me... but say taking a 350mb file down to 150mb or so with very little quality loss is worth it too me...is that possible???...i dont really care if its mkv or whatever file types I just assumed that the mkv files allowed for equal quality at lower file size...but im a newbie for sure when it comes to re working these files..

a good compression tool (i think it is THE BEST) is called handbrake, can converte your video files relative fast.
