Older dvd players will only recognise a dvd-r disc, newer ones recognise both. If it can't see a +R disc it almost certainly wont be a divx player.
Nero usually burns OK, but the speed and output quality is inferior to ConvertXtoDVD, which was recommended by hondaboi.
ConvertX is purpose built to convert avi to dvd, it is foolproof and does not let me down.

BTW, Nero in common with every other dvd-movie burning software produces a disc format that is recognized by every dvd player according to the settings provided prior to encoding - that is NTSC or PAL. With a correctly burned disc, the only way it cant be recognized is if you got NTSC/PAL thing wrong or if the +R book-type is not recognized by the player because it was around before +R.

you're saying two things if I have understood you.

    1. you want to copy an avi file to DVD and play it in your lounge
    DVD player.

    2. you have converted the avi file to DVD format and have written
    them to DVD with Nero.

which one do you want to do??

before you get bogged down trying other programs like ConvertXtoDVD
(which incidentally is very good for converting avi files to DVD format and
writing to DVD), have you looked at the DVD you created using NERO.
You should use Burn Video files to DVD option in nero and add all the files
from the movie folder i.e. '.IFO' files & '.VOB' files and others that are in
    the folder.

If you have created the DVD properly with Nero, then if you look at the
DVD you should have 2 folders on it, namely :- AUDIO_TS & VIDEO_TS.
The audio folder is usually empty and the Video folder contains all the
'.IFO' & '.VOB' files etc. PowerDVD can test play the DVD on the computer
before you take it to your lounge DVD player.

If I've misunderstood what you are trying to do then sorry, but I hope
the info above will be of some use.
