I'm about to install windows vista on my computer, but I want to create another partition with windows xp installed on it so I can transfer my valued files to it in case of a catastrophe while installing vista.
So I guess my question is: Can I transfer files from one partition to the other? And if I have two partitions with xp will it affect my master boot record?

yes
And if I have two partitions with xp will it affect my master boot record?
won't hurt a thing
do you have unpartitioned space on your HD
if not you will need a bootable partition app like partition magic
you should back-up all important data b4 resizing tho
you might be able to install vista on the "new" partition and leave XP partition alone
never did it but don't know why not
yes
