Aside from the software you choose, be sure that you DO NOT install any software on the drive you are trying to recover. If possible, use a second hard disk as the boot drive and use the drive to be recovered as a slave drive.
The less you write to the drive to be recovered, the better chance you will have recovering data. apparently you have never had a hard disk problem. I've had to perform data recovery on my own drives plenty of times. It happens. Accusing someone of snooping without knowing the situation is rude.
