    You don't need double layer discs but you get some decreased picture quality when you compress to less than 70% of the original.
    Use anydvd 6.3.1.5 to rip the protection off.
    Use clonedvd2 2.9.1.5 to compress on burn the dvd - only copy the movie title and preserve the menu only (and get rid of any extra languages/subtitles - also pick one off either dolby or dts - not both) - otherwise you get all the extra crap and your compression drops from 70% to 50% from the director's commentary/previews/etc.

    To get rid of any protection a disc has use AnyDVD, and then dvdshrink if you are looking to use 4.7GB dvds
