you cant play xvid movies only wmv movies so your going to have to convert all your movies that are in another format that is not in wmv format
although there are some other freeware programs not offical by microsoft that allow you to play xvid files and other formats too but i dont know the names of em maybe someone can shed some light on them for us

The application you require is "Transcode360", here's the link to the developers site. It is completely free and works brilliantly, the vista version is a bit buggy you
need to right click on the .exe select properties and give permission to all users to access the app (as the 360 is considered a seperate user with its own windows profile).

As far as I am aware you require either windows media center or vista premium or better to stream video content to the 360.
However if you are running xp, I heard there is a way to achieve this through windows media player 11 but I am unsure of the
specifics as I have never had to try it.

You have to convert to WMV, no program allows xvid etc -> 360, with the exception of transcode360, but thats only for MCE, so It wont work for me (tried already)

Use winAVI video converter, then set it to 1400kbps, you COULD go DVD Quality, but it takes longer to convert.

I just Use 1400kbps, if the source is good, then the video will only become a wee-bit pixilated, but its very watchable (i've watched, season 1 and 2 of battlestar gallactica, ghost rider, world trade center, and like 10 other movies/shows)

But you could go for DVD Quality Encoder (WM9 or WM8) its all in advanced options of WinAVI
